About EEO 2009

http://www.practicalhandgun.com/article ... ition.html

The Ceska Zbrojovka Extreme European Open Practical Pistol Competition
|
EXTREME suitably describes just about everything for this match, with 30 stages, 550 round count with the top IPSC shooters in all divisions and this year they also made sure that we had another extreme weather event! Organised by the Hell squad - Moravian IPSC Club and the Czech Republic IPSC Region, the Ceska Zbrojovka 2009 Extreme European Open ( EEO ) was a truly spectacular event! Outside of Level 4 and 5 IPSC competitions, it is not often that match organisers take on the mighty task of running a 30 stage competition for over 500 competitors. In fact, the European Championship would not match this event for the number of stages and the round count of 550 rounds.

Competitors came from all over Europe, both the established IPSC regions and the newly emerging IPSC regions in Eastern Europe. As well as the competitors from European countries, in which Israel and Russia are included, competitors from other countries around the world also participated in the match. Outside of continental Europe, competitors travelled from as far away as Canada, South America, South Africa, the Philippines and New Zealand to participate in this match. From speaking with many of them they were all in agreement that it was well worth the journey. The international attendance from a total of 42 nations helped to add to the atmosphere of what was the biggest IPSC competition in Europe in 2009.

Competitors came from 42 different countries to take part in EEO 2009. This was one of the contingent from Norway

The shooting ranges at Hodonice have a common backstop, with each bay being separated by earth walls, which allows each range to run independently. Parking areas, refreshments, seating areas and a trade show were lead on for the event. Parking was to one side of the complex with a gravel road leading to the refreshment and trade show area and the ranges. This is a new facility that was formally a sand quarry. Under Czech law when the quarrying was finished the land has to be utilised for a project that meets with government approval or returned to nature. One of these conditions has been met with the development of the range. There is more room for future development. This range will be capable of hosting a European Championship, or even a World Shoot.

The event started on 31st May with the Pre Match on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for all the range officers and match officials. Competitors based themselves around Znojmo and arrived in the town on Wednesday to register for the match.

The Main Match started on the Thursday morning of 4th June and consisted of 30 stages, shot ten per day over three half days. The competitors were grouped into 48 squads of 10 shooters, which shot for half a day alternating between mornings and afternoons; 7.00 am to 1.00 pm and 1.45 pm until 8.00 pm. The way the match was organised meant that 24 squads shot in the morning and another 24 squads shot in the afternoon. Each stage was run by a range officer and / or an International Range Officers Association ( I.R.O.A. ) official. A lot of local children assisted with the patching and target resetting. Although the competitors spent half a day at the range for three days, the RO’s were there for the whole day, every day. With two RO’s running two of the nine round stages back to back, even in these short stages this still meant over 10,000 scoring decisions to make over the three days of the match.

Czech shooter Roman Podlesak as he races through Stage 7. He finished in fifth place in Standard Division.

The increasing popularity of IPSC shooting in Europe has lead to competitions in European designed to take large numbers of competitors. The CZ EEO was designed to take up to 480 competitors in the main match and up to 160 in the pre match. The main match was over subscribed.

The stage designs were very testing. The competitors shot 10 stages per day, in a half day format, which ran to the scheduled time table with no delays or long waiting periods. All the range officers put in a lot of effort to keep everything running smoothly and on time, with a minimum lunch break for them. The morning squads started at 07.00 am and were finished by 1.00 pm. The afternoon squads started at 1.45 pm and were completed by 8.00 pm. Running squads of 10 competitors through 10 stages in six hours twice per day was a great achievement.

Mary Grace Tan from the Philippines engages the targets. She finished in fourth place in Ladies Open Division.

Match Statistics

With the popularity of practical pistol competition in Europe on the increase, this translated into all five IPSC Competition Divisions being well represented at the EEO. This also spread into the various categories of lady, junior, senior and super senior. Production and Standard Division were the most popular with 208 and 153 competitors respectively. Open Division had a total of 109 shooters in this category. The number of competitors in both Production and Standard Division has steadily increased so that it now equalling or exceeding Open Division in popularity. This is borne out in other major matches around Europe. Modified and Revolver Divisions continue to have their devotees with 21 and 17 entries respectively. A new category continued with this year was M1911 single stack, in which 10 competitors took part. With a total of 518 competitors finishing the match, this made the 2009 EEO the biggest match in Europe this year.

Alex Szakacz from Canada using the new Open Division pistol from CZ, which is in 9mm Major caliber.

The 30 stages were grouped into three areas and consisted of 12 short stages of nine rounds; 11 medium stages of between 16 and 25 rounds and seven long stages of 32 rounds for a minimum round count of 550 rounds for the match. As well as static full sized and partial versions, the IPSC Classic targets consisted of moving, bobbing and swinging versions placed between two and 20 metres from the competitors. Twenty eight of the 30 stages included different forms of reactive targets.

Many of the stages offered a challenge, with different ways to complete the stage. With lots of small steel plates, many swingers, movers and a couple of longer range poppers and paper targets, difficult targets were combined with “run and gun” targets in most stages.

Results

Eric Grauffel continues to be the top European Open Division competitor. Saul Kirsch was eight percent behind Eric and the Czech Republic’s Miroslav Havlíček came in third place on 89 %. The percentage gap between the next group of shooters now opened up as Eric’s continual dominance of the sport continues. In Women’s Open Division Lenka Horejsi from the Czech Republic came first, with fellow Czech shooter Katerina Sustrova and STI European Team member Irene Canetta from Italy taking second and third place respectively. In the open junior class Robin Sebo from Czech Republic came in first place. Rald Abel Santos, from the Philippines came second. Mattias Werner form Sweden was close behind in third place.

Lenka Horejsi leaps from the bed on Stage 24. She finished in first place in Women’s Open Division.

Current IPSC World Champion Eric Grauffel guns his way through Stage 13. He went on to win Open Division with a 9% margin.

Whereas open division is a case of one man being chased by the rest of the pack, the rest of the divisions are not just as quite a done deal. Modified division has a widespread competitor base in Europe. Basically an open class gun that fits in the IPSC box in .40 S&W. Building one will test a gunsmith’s skills to get everything working properly, while reducing the dimensions to ensure the assembled pistol will fit within the required size. Zdenek Henes from the Czech Republic was first, with Giorgio Patria and Davide Cerrato, both from Italy, in second and third place.

In Production Division current World and European Champion Adam Tyc from the Czech Republic was obviously the favourite to win in the EEO, which he did. Fellow Czech shooter Miroslav Zapletal beat USA based Angus Hobdell into third place by 0.16 %. This was a first, second and third place for the CZ IPSC Shooting Team, who were all using the CZ75 SP01 Shadow. This division was the most popular at the Extreme Euro Open. It continues to grow in popularity at matches, due to the fact that you don’t need to take out a second mortgage to purchase the equipment to take part and you do not get the temperamental performance that can sometimes plague the equipment for the other Divisions. As well as being the perfect entry level into IPSC matches, Production Division at the top level is also as competitive as any other division.

Empty cases fly as another round chambers into Adam Tyc’s SP01 Shadow. Adam went onto win Production Division.

In Revolver Division the Smith and Wesson Model 625 revolver with full moon clips in .45 ACP caliber is the most popular choice of revolver in this division. Ricardo Lopez from Ecuador, who is the current IPSC World Champion in Revolver Division, was in first place. Jiri Jedlicka and Tibor Ladič, both from the Czech Republic, were second and third.

In Standard Division Italy’s Adriano Ciro Santarcangelo, came first, with STI Euro Team member Gregory Midgley 1.5 % behind him. The Czech Republic’s Zdeněk Liehne was in third place. A continuing inclusion in the CZ EEO was a category for the M1911 single stack pistol. Finland’s Stefan Borgström came in first place, with Czech Republic competitors Pavel Dadák and Adam Kopecký in second and third place. The prize giving took place on Sunday afternoon and in the morning before this there was a steel plate man v man shoot off for the top placed finalists in each division. Always a crowd pleasing spectacle, a large number of competitors gathered to watch. As well as the prizes for the winners of all the categories there was also a prize draw, the first prize of which was a car! This was won by Ulf Berg from Sweden. Have a look at the competition web site www.extremeeuroopen.eu for a full set of results.

At the prize giving at the match Eric Grauffel gave us some news. From his win at the European Championship in Crete in 1998 Eric has dominated Open Division, winning each European Championship and World Shoot since. When he is competing in matches in France Eric also shoots in Production and Standard Division. Next year there it looks like Eric will compete in two major European matches in different IPSC Divisions; one in Production Division and one in Standard Division.

CZ IPSC Team member Irena Liehne engages the targets with her 9mm caliber CZ75 Tactical Sport on Stage 10. She finished in second place in Lady’s Standard Division.

Those of you who were at the CZ EEO in 2008 will remember the BIG storm hit on Saturday afternoon. During this years match the weather remained hot and sunny during the main match, with temperatures approaching 25 degrees Celsius. Everything was running on schedule, until 6.00 pm on Saturday when the skies grew black and a swirling cloud formation was twisting above us, while the thunder and lightening boomed and crackled. I am sure that many competitors were thinking “not again!”. We had a “touch down” between the village of Hodonice and the range. The edge of this swirling formation swept across Area One, which contained stages one to ten and the trade and refreshment area. Luckily the main part of the storm passed to one side of us and everything resumed within a few minutes. Two days after the match the area around the range was subjected to a large amount of rain fall that submerged a large section of the range, meaning that the match would have ground to a permanent halt.

The Czech Extreme European Open accommodated the 518 shooters who completed the match, with 07.00 am starts and approaching 8.00 pm finishes. The match worked due to the pre planning and organisation and the dedication of the range officials and range staff. Even with this years tornado, congratulations are due to the match sponsors Ceska Zbrojovka ( CZ ), Hell Squad - Moravian IPSC Club and the Czech Republic IPSC Region and IROA for giving all the competitors three action packed and thoroughly enjoyable days of shooting. In a few short years the Czech Republic has come to the point were it now has some of the world’s best IPSC competitors and organises some of the best IPSC matches in Europe. The European Extreme Open 2010 has been confirmed for the 3rd to the 6th June next year, so keep an eye on the competition web site www.extremeeuroopen.eu for the match details.

A lot of stages included a range of close, medium and long range targets.
